Lawn mowers / Mountfield 725M
Last post by plazydays - March 09, 2026, 07:50:47 PM
Hi All, I have a Mountfield 725M in my workshop and I have struggled to find anything clear cut on the engine which is an Intek 6.5hp.
My biggest issue is the carb set up and linkage. The throttle/choke lever when used seems to catch the airbox housing on the levers in the carb when operated and I cannot workout what is wrong. I'v tried all sorts so if anyone has any advise or pictures/links to an exploded carb diagram, anything in fact to help me out I would really appreciate it.

Hi All.
Newbie here.
Just a domestic user in rural Lincs, with time on my hands to tinker with things for the garden.
Always interested in learning.
Also probably reluctant to trust stuff to dealers for maintenance and especially repairs.
In a former life was involved in 'continuous improvement' manufacturing processes.
So don't really find the modern machinery trends rewarding - where it's more cost effective to chuck something away and replace it with plastic than keep it alive.
Poor design and quality that's intended to fail so they can sell more stuff.
Anyway.
That's how I came across the Forum.
Good luck to All and keep spreading the knowledge.
Hopefully I'll be back from time to time.

Workshop Tools / Re: 3D Printed Parts

Nice.    I know you can buy these cable tie bases with an adhesive backings, or even some with really strong magnetic backings, but no idea how much they cost.  I do love the idea of being able to just print something like this when you need it though. Cool.  8)

Thought of the forum this afternoon... here's something I knocked up in 15 minutes.
Sure - I could have (and did have) the zip tie going through the hole, but this is better for my OCD, and I was replacing the tap anyway.

Not sure if you can buy these?

Get one here if you have a 3d printer, or message me if you want one/some.

  done...the air filter case was not sealing on the carb face..needed a slight bend on the bracket that comes off the head bolts..starts first pull...at last...now to set up the correct revs and wait for some grass.....  many thanks for all yout help..cheers

Sounds like the fuel system still has issues, but I'd check that the seal between carb and inlet tube is good, and also make sure the inlet tube is sealed and tight against the engine block.

From memory, some of these had a very light damper spring on the throttle shaft of the carb, this helps with hunting. Also have the revs set too high will cause them to hunt but you said it doesn't increase on the throttle so doubt it's that.

Nearly all engines have a automatic compression release, but that would work on the exhaust valve. If you have no tappet clearance on the inlet valve that will be the issue.  You're going to have to remove the valve and grind a tiny amount off the end of the valve stem until the correct clearance is achieved.  That said, if the valve face is badly worn that will need refacing or replacing, and then grinding back in.
