Honda HR194 split roller not doing 180s for turning

Hello, I think my lawnmower problem has been covered elsewhere but not for this particular mower, the HR194 is a rotary mower with split rear roller to enable easy turning.

My drive cable snapped while in use. I stopped mowing for a minute then as there was little left to mow I restarted and pushed the machine through the last couple of rows.

With the help of Menditman's videos I was able to remove the roller, replace the drive cable and reassemble. The mower works and propels ok but the split roller does not allow easy turning anymore where the two halves should turn independently in opposite directions.

My question is whether this problem is due to a malfunction in the gearbox, and if so what? The rest of the roller components move freely bearings are good and parts quite clean.

Attached are some screengrabs of the same model of mower showing the machine, roller and gearbox.

Any advice appreciated as I am fixing it myself.

Thanks

Jim

Hi Jim, and welcome to TGMForum.

The roller system in your photo is basically two roller sections fitted onto a splined shaft, it's not designed to let the rollers move independently or for easy turning of the machine.  It basically works like one solid roller. This is why a lot of domestic users find them heavy to manoeuvre. Likewise with the KAAZ, MTD Pro, Cobra Pro etc, they all use the same sort of system.

Hope this info helps.

Oh heck. That sounds reasonable - means I don't have anymore fiddling to do! But I felt sure it was much harder to turn than usual, I even thought I used to see it go oppositely when I 180'd. Maybe I am getting confused with the other split rollers I've used in the past like atco and hayter. This sounds like the quickest fix ever.

Thanks

And thanks for replying so soon.
