I have a mj66 e alpina  ride on mower with a briggs and Stratton 950e engine, the engine has no I'd stamped on it anywhere apart from a couple of stickers which doesn't bear any resemblance to a B&S ID number.

Right it had become very hard to start and now turns over but no start, it's had a new plug and coil and still no start. I did find a blown fuse and a disconnected copper strap on the circuit board, I replaced the fuse and did a repair on the circuit board.

Is the wire to the coil supposed to be live as it has no reading when off or trying to start.
I'm getting too old to be starting with fiddling with stuff again, although I have a rudimentary knowledge of engines wiring is not my forte.
When it runs it runs fine I can cut but i can't do a push mower so it'll become a hay field of a garden again.

Hi Jimcub, and welcome to TGMForum.

The wire on the coil is a stop wire, it goes to ground to kill the spark. I'm guessing something in the safety circuit on the machine is grounding this wire.  You could try disconnecting it from the machine and see if it will run, but bear in mind you'll have to stop the machine somehow if it does.  And keep your hands and feet well away from rotating engine parts and blades.

I'm not familiar that machine, the engine yes, just not the actual machine.  Like I said it's possible the safety circuit is sending that stop wire to earth which is what it's designed to do if certain conditions are not met. Like not sitting on seat, clutch pedal switch, blade switch, drive neutral switch, or grass collector present switch etc.
