No Spark Issue -on Honda GCV160

The lead from the coil to the spark plug broke so I got a new coil.  I have tested it with a multi-meter and it seems to give the right reading (thanks to Micks Mower helpful videos).  I set the coil gap at 0.3mm.
I tested that the grounding wire works as it should. That is, no continuity when the brake lever is pulled.

So when the flywheel spins, and the coil is working, why is it not stimulating the spark plug to give  a spark?

Could it be the magneto.

Thanks

Mick

Hi.  I'll be honest and say it's a complete waste of time putting a meter on a ignition coil.  While you can test the windings it doesn't mean the internal trigger is working.

Is the new coil a genuine Honda one?  Although you tested the stop wire, have you tried it with the wire disconnected from the coil.

It was one of thoses Amazon ones

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0D8KCF2SS?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title.

I unplugged the ground lead, turned the mower to check for spark.  I am using the brand new coil, as shown above, but which could well be couterfeit, and a brand new spark plug from Halfords.  I specifically didnt buy that from Amazon to ensure is was geniune.

Doing a bit more research (learning), am I right in thinking that the Magneto and the Coil are the same thing.  Is a magneto a type of coil or a part of the coil.

Thanks for your help.

Here are some picture showing the testing I did.

The multimeter was set to 20K Ohms for each test. .

1.  Testing main block to the end of the lead - Reads 15.37 K Ohms
2.  Testing the little middle block to the end of the lead - Reads 15.37 K Ohms
3.  Testing the ground spade to the end of the lead - Reads 6 K Ohms

Thanks Mick, this makes sense.  The fact the the sparl plug shows no attempt to produce a spark - it points to there being no currect going agross the gap.

I would eliminate a possible faulty plug too by trying a new one or known good one, they do break down, and those engines are fussy as hell on plugs.

But yes to be honest the best test bed you have right there is the engine it's bolted to. As long as flywheel magnets are good, suppressor cap (where fitted) is good, stop wire disconnected and no spark means dead coil.

You get what you pay for.  Amazon supplied me with a dead coil.  Went L&S Engineers for new one and it works.

Thank Mick - you were right.

Thanks
