Yes they modified the harnesses on some to remove extra un-needed connectors.  The symptoms were usually engine either wouldn't do anything to the more common starter pulsing instead of constantly cranking. Pull all the plugs on the engine and make sure they are clean and tight. Especially the one on the plastic cowl below the battery.
