Float bowl drain bolt problem

Hi,

I have a Mountfield 414. I loosened the bolt underneath the float bowl drain to drain some bad fuel out of the engine but in the process the whole bowl came off.

Whatever I do, I can't tighten the bolt properly again even though the thread looks fine.

There are two bolts on the bowl, one at an angle and one underneath and it was the bottom one that I loosened.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Many thanks,
Adam

Hi Adam, and welcome to TGMF.

The two bolts, the one at an angle is a drain bolt (just for information). You could perhaps just undone that one until it flushed itself through with fresh fuel.

So when you removed the float bowl, was there any rubber seals that fell out when you removed it? The top of the bowl should site snug against a sealing ring and the carb body.

So make sure top seal is there, and a washer or rubber seal on the bottom bolt.  And also make sure the bottom of the bowl hasn't been bent upwards, it should be perfectly flat just where the bolt sits. Also although the bolt looks fine, make sure you haven't cross threaded it when putting it back in.  Check the bolt screws all the way in without the bowl.

If in doubt attach a few pictures of bottom of bowl etc.
