Honda HRG465C3 - Weak spark

Hi Guys,

My daughters machine HRG465C3 - GJAFE 135cm (GCV 135cm) engine, has a weak spark if any.

Checked kill switch and functioning. Set my multimeter to 20k Ohms and shows a reading of 9.5 Ohms on the coil ht-lead to body/kill switch terminal.

From that, I take it that the coil is no good. ??

Hi hondamow, and welcome to TGMForum.

A weak spark, is that at the plug? or from the end of the HT lead? I'm assuming you've tried a gap tester to see if it jumps a decent gap?

You can disconnect the switch wire completely to test for spark, but you probably know this. Also check air gap between coil poles and flywheel magnet.

Also make sure you try a new spark plug because they can eat plugs.

Thanks,
Checked kill switch with meter, all good.
Using another plug with a clip to earth on engine, still hardly or if any spark.
From reading elsewhere, the coil is suspect having such high reading, where normally 2.8 to 5.0 ohms 🤷🏻♂️

It's possible that the coil has failed, though got to say quite rare on the Honda's. Out of the thousands of Honda IZY's we sold and serviced over the years I think I've changed one. Unlike the Briggs & Stratton or STIHL ones where we've changed hundreds.

Normally if there's a spark at the end of the HT lead they will run, if no spark with switch disconnected then bin the coil.
