HRD535 starter cord replacement

Hi everyone,

I'm new here - thanks for having me. I've recently had my HRD535 serviced, and all going well. Annoyingly the pull cord snapped (it had done a good stint). I've been trying to replace it and struggling with online support due to age of mower and no reference in the manual.

I can get a new cord in fine, but for some reason the spring / tension seems to not be working, so once manually wound and engine started the cord doesn't recoil. Am I missing something really obvious?

Cheers, Herbie

Mick

Hi Herbie, and welcome to TGMF.

So you wound the recoil up before adding the cord?

Looking at the first image which is from under the starter, you would need to

1: Remove the starter cord
2: Turn the pulley (which is facing you) anticlockwise all the way until it stops, then back it off about one full turn and line up the hole for the cord and the hole in the outer housing.  Reason I say back it off one turn is to prevent the spring being over wound and breaking when pulling the starter.
3: Thread the new cord through those two holes and tie the knot at pulley end, and add the starter grip etc

That should be good to go.

If you find the pulley has no spring resistance while winding it up, then it's either the end of the spring has unhooked itself from the pulley or housing when the cord snapped, or the spring has broken.
