Hi there , just wondering if I can get any help with this harrier 56 . The aux shaft coming out the side of the engine has snapped . A few questions , does anyone know this engine model? , if the spindle is directly into the engine ? , and is it hard to remove?
Regards Matt

Hi Matt, and welcome to TGMForum.

Oh dear, that's not good. It's a engine and sump off job I'm afraid.

Do you have the code number off the silver sticker on the back of the machine, and the engine numbers stamped into the metal cowl above the exhaust, then I'll try and find you the parts necessary parts lists.

I know it's a Briggs Intek engine, but just need to be sure of all the numbers.

Just going to add more info while I await the model numbers.

This was quite a common failure on this machine due to the extra length of the shaft assembly on the 22" machine.

Can also be caused by ether a badly worn or broken outer bushing, or someone fitting the outer bushing upside down putting stress on the shaft, or missing spacers on the bushing mounting bolts  meaning the belt pulls back on the unsupported shaft.  The roll pins holding the sleeve to the shaft had a habit of creeping out of the shaft, and it has been know for people to try and fit a slightly larger pin resulting in the shaft breaking across the pin hole. And also can break if you try and remove or fit pins by knocking them in or out without supporting the shaft properly.

I would imagine it's going to be difficult to get a new shaft, and you might have to go second hand.  The Hayter parts like sleeve, roll pins, outer pulley, outer bushing etc should still be available, and if fitting a new pto shaft I would change all those parts together.
