Have you checked and cleaned the points behind the flywheel? They can very often lose their spark when not used for long periods.

Does that mean I need to remove the flywheel? Because I've no idea how to do that,
Is it threaded or pull off? As I really don't fancy breaking it lol not after all the work I've put in already.

Andy, yes you have to remove the flywheel. Do you have a hammer?

Although it has a key the flywheel sits on a taper.  If you unscrew the starter clutch again, and remove the domed washer.  Then looking at the flywheel face on, if you turn the flywheel so it's set like this image.

You'll see the key and keyway is away from the arrow in the pic.  Where the arrow is pointing give it a sharp blow with said hammer while holding the flywheel with your left hand. It should come off without issue.

Mick I'm looking forward to giving it a good smack tomorrow lol, it is frustrating, but I'm learning as I go,
The smaller lawnmower engines like a Mountfield are so easy to repair, but this is way past my skill set, with help from you like this put my mind at ease.

Once it's off I will give it a clean and see what happens. Didn't want to give in to easy yet.

Cheers

Hi Mike,
After all the hard work the engine was knackered, I had a mechanic take a look and he said swop it out for another one, so I've been and bought one but I can't get this thing of the old engine and would like pointing in the right direction. We've tried a bearing puller but didn't work. And a little tickel with a hammer but still nothing.
Please see pictures

Cheers for your help

Mick

Hi again, hope this one's ok.

What I would do to get that coupling off is,

1: Give it a good dose of penetrating fluid.
2:Clean the shaft behind it thoroughly with emery cloth until shiny clean.
3: Get a piece of pip to fit between the three lugs on the coupling, but also big enough to fit over the shaft.
4: Knock the coupling further on to the shaft on to the clean shaft. Then clean the part of the shaft in front of it then pull it off.

I get ya, we've got the woodwoth key out if that's what you call it but no budge on the part,
This engine I got today I've seen it running, paid 60 quid for it though, this one needs to have the head rebuild because of some scrapes one the piston, which is unlucky.
We've been at it for a couple of hours I was so hoping the engine would be on and running tonight, I was going to do a glory photo and send it to you, then this blinking bit won't come off. Anyway I've called it for tonight as kids are going to bed now and they don't want to hear me shouting profanities lol.
Thanks again Mike for responding like you do
