Which oil?

What oil do you recommend for modern 4-stroke mower engines? I planned to put 5w30 fully synthetic in a B&S EVC300, but must it be the B&S version, or can I use Fully Synthetic car oil like Castrol or Valvoline?

We tend to use either SAE30 or 10W30 But as long as it meets the specs it should be fine,

I'm curious to know if mower oil has different additives to motor oil. I am an old cynic and believe they are the same standard in a different bottle. Perhaps I'm wrong.

Some might be the same or very similar, oils made for motor vehicles do have different additives which can be damaging for small engines, but to be honest as long as it meets the specs for your engine it will be fine.
