Think I would stay in the warm too, 16°f that's far to cold for me.  :o

Glad you got it fixed. I agree though they are a bit awkward and fiddley to work on, especially if you haven't done it before. I remember the first time I had to replace a variator pulley not long after that particular model came out.

But they do get easier when you've done a few hundred of them.  ;)

Jeff that end of the governor spring you're holding, if you swing it left just behind the carb bowl to that tall arm to the left of the carb. You'll see a row of small holes in that arm for the spring to hook into.  Choose the second or third from top of those holes.

The cable would clamp onto that plate just below the throttle lever on the right side, and hook into a hole on the lever.

Quote from: Gregs mowing on February 25, 2024, 10:59:17 PMThink they are installing new seals to prevent cams falling out and grit getting into now Mick?

Greg, I can understand the dirt and grit situation we always said they should be better sealed.  But I can't see how the cams could possibly fall out.

Quote from: MillRat on February 25, 2024, 01:54:45 PMNewest vehicle I own. 2000 chevy silverado with over a quarter million miles on it.

Just about run in then.  ;D My 2007 Volvo V50 has just over 200,000 miles on it.

So you had to get the torch on those hinges, hope you had a bucket of water to hand, just in case.  ;)

You're very lucky to have all that space to unwind in.  That pond of yours, does it have any wildlife in it. Fish, frogs, toads etc?

What happened Jeff, the hinges just got worn out, door droop? I remember trying to knock some hinge pins out on one of my old bangers years ago, they were a extremely tight fit.

Quote from: MillRat on February 23, 2024, 05:17:06 PMI've got to put some hings pins in door hinges in my silverado truck drivers door this weekend, then I plan on taking the cover off the carb and posting a picture to see if someone has an idea how the governor springs and throttle should hook up. :)

I had 800 hasta plants given to me this past fall from a friend that works in the plant industry. I'm going to plant them on my land for wildlife. I'm going to need a tiller this spring. :)

Yep whip the filter cover off Jeff and let's take a look.

So what's the Plan Jeff, strip it down get it running again? Should be a breeze after working on your truck.  Or perhaps find another engine to bolt on.

Jeff, We don't really see those type of air filter boxes on machines over here, what has it got for a filter inside?  Also, is the primer supposed to be connected, or does it have a choke?  I'm guessing the engine off a snow blower or similar.

STIHL MS171 - MS181 Not Oiling?

The usual and most common cause of this issue on these models is the oil hose.  It might look ok even when you remove it from the saw, but I can almost guarantee replacing the hose will cure the non oiling issue. Seen people change oil pumps and worm drives and to be honest it's rarely necessary.

Symptoms: with the bar and chain removed and running the saw at reasonably high revs, you'll see it spitting and blowing the occasional bubble out of the oil channel.

Lawn mowers / Always use fresh fuel
February 18, 2024, 02:53:39 PM
This applies to all your petrol (Gas) powered machinery.  Always use fresh fuel and try and avoid fuel left over from last year.  It will save you a lot of running issues and better starting.

Two stroke fuel, always give it a shake before use to keep the oil mixed evenly in the can.

If concerned that your STIHL sealed for life gear head on your strimmer / brushcutter running low on grease, you'll noticed these units being "sealed for life" no longer have a grease bung. So how do you get grease into them.

Well there is a way to do this.  You need to remove the gear head from the main tube, then with a needle grease gun or syringe you can inject grease through the input gear where the drive shaft would normally locate. It's a bit of faffing around but might just save your gear head.
