Hi,
I'm servicing my carb for the first time on my HP474 but I can't remove the jet, the driver doesn't seem to grip the jet.  Does a flat blade screwdriver work or is a special tool required?

Thanks

Hi Liam,

It all comes down to the shape of your screwdriver blade. Most screwdrivers have tapers on the broad plane of the blade that cant come into contact with the sides of the jet bore before the blade is actually properly located in the cut-out in the head of the screw. I use an electricians screwdriver for removing carb jets because the blades are straight from the shaft. Also ensure that the body of the carb is held securely in a vice because a slipping screwdriver can cause damage too.

It may also pay to put your carburetor upside down in a vice and soak the jet in penetrating oil prior to attempting to undo it.

Please be aware that the jet is made of a soft metal can be easily damaged and on rare occasions I have found it impossible to remove the main jet and then it is a new carburetor.

I hope this helps!

Kevin
