Advice con rod knock

Hi Mick and all, got given a Honda HRD536c 4-wheeler with the GCV160. Definite con-rod knocking sound and oil was very low. Ripped into the engine - no sign of heat wear on the crankshaft journal or deep scratches. Cylinder is free from any scratches. Question is do I just replace the con-Rod and get new bolts or will the crank need replacing too?

Thanks for any checks, tips or thoughts.

Mick

You sure its a GCV160?

I don't have the tolerances to hand atm.  But if you can find them, you could just measure the crankshaft journal first to be sure.

I know some GCV engines fitted to the Polly deck mowers can sound extremely noisy even from brand new, and sounding like big end knock.

:o Dear oh dear Mick, what an insult! Of course it's a GCV160 - I think it's the HRD536 TXE version in UK but here it's marketed as the HRD536c.

Anyway I had a closer look at the crank. The journal is not too bad but there's a lot of scratching on the upper part of the crank just under the oil seal on the top of the engine (under the flywheel). Clearly that's where the lack of oil caused the most damage. So I think it's a new crankshaft and piston connecting rod. Will do rings at same time.

Mick given the gcv doesn't have an upper bearing is that scoring on the upper part of the crank housing under the oil seal at top of the engine a big deal? I could use some 1500 grit sandpaper to remove the worst of the scoring. Will replace upper and lower oil seals.

Well you shocked me didn't think you touched that sort of glued together junk. lol, thought you were a GXV man.  ;D  Well hopefully the top plain bearing is ok.

Just to close this off, it's not economic to repair this as I'd need a new crank, rod and cylinder. I've sourced a good used engine with same crank.
