Einhell self propelled always on

Recently picked up a einhell gh-pm 56 s hw   lawnmower which has self propelled always on, and after having a look I'm baffled as to What's causing it?  There is no real movement in the unit and the cable is loose not tight, tightening the cable does nothing as it doesn't move the unit. I've never worked on a einhell before so this is a bit alien to me. Any help or ideas will be much appreciated.

Hi Mattyboy44, and welcome to TGMF.

Looking at the first photo you supplied, it shows the clutch lever and return spring is missing from the top of the gearbox.

On the right of that photo you'll notice a little threaded part with two flats, a metal lever should stretch across from that and the other end attach to the spring on the end of the cable.  The other raised plastic post  should have a small spring hooked on it to the other end of that lever to return or pull it into the neutral position.

Thanks that makes more sense now. So the  bits I'm missing can they be purchased and added to this and do you know where I can find a photo or diagram of the gearbox.

I doubt you'll be able to buy them separately, they normally come as a full transmission assembly with the lever and return spring attached. That said I could be wrong, but I've not dealt with much Einhell stuff.

Unfortunately I think your right and that wouldn't be worth my while buying at that cost. So I'm wandering if einhell use the same parts as any other lawnmower brands and also if I could get a photo of the unit is it something I could possibly make work. Or maybe just give up on it and sell

I'm pretty sure that Einhell don't actually make the transmission and just use a generic one which is used on some other brands of machines.

I did a little mock up for you of how it looks when complete. Not to scale but it should give you some idea. Hope this helps.

Thanks for this much appreciated. I'm struggling to find a replacement that looks the same I'm wondering if this is something I could possibly make and make work somehow?

Mick

You could make one out of a strip of steel, drilling a couple of holes where the flats are and filing to shape until it fits.  It's just a case of getting the length right to make it work with the cable.

The return spring is also important, so you'll need to find one or adapt one to fit.

I've noticed that some of the Chinese mowers also have a spring internally in the gearbox which actually pulls it into drive. This external spring overrides it to pull it out of drive until you engage it via the cable.  Had a couple of Cobra mowers here they would continue to drive after releasing the drive lever because the external spring broke or fell off. Why they do this is beyond me.

All that said, it might pay you confirm the gearbox actually works before putting all the effort into making that part. Turning the clutch shaft with a small spanner or similar and with belt removed try turning the pulley and check the drive is working properly.

You might also be able to source a suitable lever from a scrap gearbox from your local mower dealer.  ;)
