Hi Mick. Got a 56 pro current 579. Starts fine but runs quite rough and chugs a bit when revs are adjusted. Black smoke can appear quite frequently. Is this something to do with the float?
I tried a new white jet and made no difference.
Any help much appreciated.

Hi Greg. 

A couple of things to check.

1: Make sure the choke is coming off correctly, the plastic linkage can jump over the choke arm so the thermal device doesn't push the choke off completely.

2: Make sure there is no fuel in the oil (That will make it run rich).

3: Then the next thing I would check is the flywheel key. Just removing the nut and the starter cup you should be able to see if it's sheared.

I actually got a new carb from dealer and now runs a treat.

Also got some new kwaki engines with the right crank for the current harrier pros and prostripe. Dunno when I'll use but with battery mowers on the horizon the current petrol ones might need to be kept going for longer and longer by those wanting to use petrol.

Have you been on Hayter dealer day yet?

Glad that cured the issue Greg, but I'm curious as to what happened to the old carb, usually they will run lean as the clog up.  Yours was emitting black smoke sometimes which suggest the opposite. Very strange.

Have you come up with any tricks to adapt the current harriers so the drive lasts longer? Heard they were trying some different solutions so the pins were better sealed and therefore greased longer?

Yep they should do some work on that, to be honest I never liked that cam system. But no I haven't heard anything. 

oh thats a shame. I do prefer the current system. lot easier to remove roller assembly and easier to replace and grease pins etc. no rusted freewheel hubs.
usually the bushes go oval and need replacing, 10 min job - happy days.

How's the new weibang rollers holding up? Saw a 48 pro weibang, not sure on the year granted, but it has a snapped gearbox shaft.

I agree it a very easy repair, probably one of the easiest they have ever produced. If they could stop the end caps moving around on the shaft then the cams would be pretty stable.  Better sealing, some proper bushes or bearings might be an improvement. Sealing should be independent to thrust / side play in rollers.

Weibang, I don't think I've worked on one for a while, only the cheapy virtue mowers lately.

Greg, I can understand the dirt and grit situation we always said they should be better sealed.  But I can't see how the cams could possibly fall out.

They would fall if the roller bush had worn down in length and the dust caps ware wafer thin. Hopefully the new seals which I think get screwed or bolted onto the end caps help a lot of issues.
