Hey Mick 👋

Thanks for the wisdom as always, sounds like you've had some success with growing your own veg, good stuff 👍🏻

Yes our plan (that's the wife's ideas and my bloody back doing the digging...) is similar to what you describe, and simple is better we think 🤔

I'll go and dig (for victory) when it's all had a good chance to rot and make my life slightly easier!

The people on other plots have been very kind and offered us plenty, we'll be stupid to not take them up I'm sure.

Have fun and be good (so you offset me 😋) and I'll be back soon.

Peace

Dave

Hey Mick, thanks for the reply 👍🏻

Yeah I blew through the exhaust with compressed air, lots of oily diesel came out, but it eventually cleared and seemed free flowing.

The gasket was my next point of call, it looks ok but is obviously old and has been on and off like a tarts knickers over the last few weeks 😆

I'll knock one up in the workshop next week when I'm on lunch, as you say I am reluctant to spend any money on this so I'll make my own... Glad I paid attention during my apprenticeship 👍🏻

Bye for now, update soon

Dave

Gardening / Ground preparation

Morning everyone 👋

In a change of topic for me, here is a picture of my allotment:

B05CF88C-E101-4483-A5A5-1CED91DCCB66.jpeg

I have been busy with work and other commitments, so my prep has suffered as a result....

Most of the plot has been dug over by me, the shed has been repaired and preserved, and I've made a little prep/play area for my boy to enjoy 😊

Problem was that after a huge effort towards the end of the summer (we only acquired the plot in late September) my commitments meant that it became quite overgrown again, especially the last 1/4 that I'd not managed to dig!

So here we are, mid December and the un dug 1/4 was 2' high with grass, and my strimmer wasn't working 😆

Luckily a mate lent me his and I attacked it with gusto last week 👍🏻

Now I've covered the whole plot with weed membrane from Screwfix (50x2 metres at £54.99) and it's good quality too. But I have questions to the professional people on here please!

After an initial rotting of the grass and the roots, what is the best way of preparing the ground?

Open question I know, but I'm looking forward to your experience and wisdom 🙏

Have fun

Dave

I did the 1 turn out setting, plug was dry.
1.5 turns out, plug wetish....

Settled on 1.5 and caved with the easy start 😊 still only runs for a second.....

Any other ideas gang??

Stumped Dave 🤮

So in addition to the above pictures.

The first one (top) is with the piston at BDC, the bore is in good condition with minimal wear, not surprisingly as this has good compression 👍🏻

The second picture shows the leading edge of the crown and the ring. Again minimal wear, and no evidence of the ring having turned and caught the port.

Third is a transfer port and part of the gudgeon pin (just visible)small scuffing evident by the shine from the torch, but no deep scoring so all ok for now. 👍🏻

Next the exhaust port.

This is before cleaning, again oily but not blocked in any way.

Next was the exhaust.

Here you can see it in situ but with the plastic heat guard removed for clarity.

Also worth a mention is this picture is after the inspection and clean, so it looks quite good but it was quite oily on first inspection.

So here is a picture of the carb needle pivot.

I have set it up with a clamped steel rule (30cm) on the carb body, and then used a 15cm steel rule to show the depth.

It was a little rushed as the rain came over just as I'd finished setting up.... 🙄 Hence the slightly blurred picture, but it was spot on 1.5mm 👍🏻

Afternoon gang, hope you are all well 👍🏻

So I have finally had the chance to take a look at the things we discussed, as a quick reminder:

1. Investigate and adjust the needle pivot height to 1.5mm below carb body
2. Remove and inspect exhaust system and check exhaust port clear, clean components and rebuild
3. Set idle screw (low speed) to 1 turn out, pull starter cord 10 times and check plug for excessive fuel. Adjust idle screw and repeat until plug appears wet, then reduce 1/4 turn in

Oh, and I have pictures too 😎

Interesting 🤔

This is worth checking out for sure 👍🏻

Can't see this being too far out as the thing was running up until a few weeks ago and then (after I used it to trim the edges of our allotment) I put it away, got it out two days later and you know the rest.....

I'll have a look at this when I get a chance.

Many thanks for your help 🙏

Oh yes and the metering valve pivot thingy.

On this carb this doesn't have any adjustment as it's just a pressed metal two pronged flap with a rolled section for the pivot pin.

I replaced it with the one supplied with the kit, but (and like every other component) I put it side by side with the replacement and there was no noticeable difference....

I'm used to setting float heights in carbs so the thought did cross my mind, maybe I'll tweak one with a pair of pliers and see🤔

Anyway, bye for now 👋

Hello Gardenkit,

Thanks for the message 👍🏻

The kit is a genuine spare from Walbro, although it was from eBay it was from a uk based garden machinery service business.

I have fitted the diaphragm as per the picture I posted on here (gasket first, then the diaphragm on top, cover plate on top of the lot and nipped up in a good old fashioned opposites type way 😉

The only thing is the little hole in the cover plate, I'm not 100% which way it should face, but as it's only there to allow movement of the diaphragm, while offering it protection (and obviously securing it to the carb!) I cannot see it makes much difference...

Still not had a chance to fiddle, update soon.

Oh and on the subject of modern fuels.....

Remind me as I have a lot to say about this 👍🏻

Good night and god bless

Hi Mick, glad you're liking the media 👍🏻

The carb has everything new in it including the diaphragm.

Still not had a chance to look at it since yesterday, I'll update when I can.

Have a good one ✌️

Here's an IPC (Illustrated Parts Catalog) image of the carb.

It's not exactly what is fitted, but 99% the same.

Made by Walbro and fitted in several forms to lots of different machinery.

As you can see there's no primer bulb so it's not the easiest thing to get going at the best of times....C941AFF6-25C6-449B-B848-B8BF2F68B85D.png
