Hi Mick and all,

Friend's Harrier 48 instart...starts perfectly when cold then simply clicks when trying to start when engine has been running warm. Coil? Thanks for any advice!

Mick

Hi.  Tim, long time no hear. ;)  I'm betting it has the old type wire harness still on it and hasn't been modified to the new type.

If you look around the right hand side of the engine at the back you'll see a wiring harness going to the starter motor and up the switch for the engine brake. If this harness has a little white plastic connector in it then it's the old type.

There is a workaround for this but it sometimes doesn't work.  Let me know if you see a connector first.  If this is the cause it will probably need a new type harness fitted eventually. They were being replaced under warranty in the past, but I doubt they will stand it now.

Edited to add images:

Thanks Mick. I've passed info on to my friend. Any idea how much the new looms are? Thanks as always.

Tim, I think they are around £30 whatever that equates to in your currency.  But you can remove the top cover (just two screws) and pull the rubber plug off the side of the side of the battery tray. Nip each terminal in the block to make it a tighter fit, and do the same with the white connector, it should get him going again at least while he awaits the replacement.  The new one takes about five - ten minutes to fit.

It's a very common problem and I have fitted loads of those harnesses over the last three years or more. Does exactly as the machine in your video.
