General Discussion / Re: Hoping to return

I have decided to stop working full-time. The injury is slowly improving, but the damage proved more severe than the first diagnosis. The medical professionals advised me to be careful with my activity because more damage could result in a catastrophic injury I might not recover from.

I will still do a bit of tinkering  ;D

I suffered a severe injury to my arm and shoulder unrelated to work. I can't do anything at all, and sadly, I am not improving. I can't do any physical activity, which drives me crazy.

I understand it is not worth the risk.

Quote from: Mick on July 04, 2023, 05:13:53 PMAs much as I'd love to share this sort of stuff, I do have to be careful with redistribution of copyrighted material.  There's nothing stopping anyone sharing stuff one-to-one via PM though.

I did check the manual, and I don't see anything about copyright. I contacted Stiga, and they freely supplied it. I will check again.

Would it be helpful if users shared their owner and workshop manuals?

I have the workshop manual for the Mountfield 725M ride-on, which has a lot of helpful information.

@Mick is there a way to share them?

The Mountfield rides on!  :D

I struggled to get it running because it was a mixture of many issues. The coil had a single filament of wire which had rusted onto the kill switch spade and shorted against the engine. The kill switch wire had a tiny cut which kept earthing. The fuel had water contamination, and the coil was so fussy I had to keep adjusting the air gap to achieve optimum spark.

On top of that, the control module had a dry joint  ???

It now starts on the first turn, and the client is delighted.

I deleted my previous post because it was garbled nonsense.

I started to lose my marbles because I couldn't determine why the stop wire had a fluctuating resistance value. I closely examined the last section of the wire, and the insulation had a tiny cut grounding to earth!  >:( It moved slightly when I measured the wire, which caused the fluctuating readings  >:(

@Mick, how hot does a breather pipe get? This mower is missing the breather pipe. I have some flexible hose but I don't know if it is heat resistant.

Thanks, Mick; I chatted with the guy today and will recheck the machine. I found so many issues with it that I confused myself and didn't do enough with it in the end.

I will temporarily remove the coil ground wire and recheck the spark before rechecking fuel delivery.

Quote from: Mick on June 26, 2023, 08:47:40 PMSafety circuit should still be active even when pull starting, parking brake on, blade off etc. Otherwise, you won't get a spark.

This is what confuses me. I get a spark when using the pull start, and the only sensor I know is open is for the grass box. The client says it always started manually with the box off, but not electronically.

Does the safety system ground the coil to prevent the spark?

Quote from: Mick on June 26, 2023, 08:19:54 PMDid you check inside the valve cover, it might have a bent pushrod or broken rocker, so only one valve opening.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that. Yes, I checked that today when looking at the flywheel key. I did expect the flywheel to be the issue, but despite hitting a boulder it was fine.

I know that all sensors should be clear before an electronic start is allowed, but you can pull-start the engine which bypasses them. Or in my case, you can't pull-start it!

It does annoy me!

Yes, it is 19069, but things worsened.

Please add your view on my attempts to start this engine. It had a new air filter and spark plug, and the previous business cleaned the carburettor. I checked the flywheel key, and it was correctly aligned.

1. Sprayed easy start in the air intake. The engine didn't start
2. Checked for spark using tester; good spark.
3. Checked the carburettor and found water in the float bowl.  :(
4. Drained the fuel and cleaned the carburettor. I added new clean fuel; it still wouldn't start. :(
5. Spoke with the owner, and he decided to not spend more money.

The machine isn't in great condition, and I asked him if he wanted me to keep trying? I said he really should consider putting the money toward another machine.

I hate to walk away from a machine without fixing it, but what else could I do?

Thanks

Quote from: Mick on June 21, 2023, 06:15:36 AMThis customer was using two stroke fuel in their old Hayter Harrier 48, then decided to bring it in for a service when it wouldn't start.

My previous neighbour needed a chainsaw and a good friend of mine agreed to loan him one. A few days later, he called me over the fence and said it wouldn't start after he refuelled it. I questioned the mix ratio and he looked puzzled. It transpires he added ATF instead of two-stroke oil ??? His reference to the red colour put the tin lid on it!

Quote from: Mick on June 24, 2023, 05:24:38 AMYou can see if the key has gone before you remove the flywheel, just remove the starter cup off the top and look down at the keyway, you can usually see if it's sheared. Nice thing about the briggs stuff is you can see both keyways on the crank and flywheel from the top.

A little advice though regarding those mowers. I run a mile if anyone asks me to repair one, they are problematic at best.  ;)

The biggest problem is the lack of access to the components. I agreed to look at it because my mate asked me. The local mower businesses wanted £80 to simply look at it.

I want to get a flywheel puller, but I'm unsure which model suits the B&S Intek 65 engine.

Thanks, Mick.

I'm investing in the correct flywheel puller. Is it the Flywheel Puller - 19203

Would the key shear despite the clutch? I suppose more importantly could it have damaged the clutch?
