If you disconnect the TH lead from the plug first, and turn the engine backwards you will feel compression.  You can't turn it forwards because the compression release will kick in and you won't feel it.

I did this yesterday, I disconnected the HT lead and then tied a bit of wire around the stop lever handle to hold it, tilted the mower back and turned the blade.

The blade turned easily for over half a turn until there was compression, then it turned easily again for half a turn.

I have a working Mountfield mower in the shed so when it stops raining I'm going to get it out and do a compression test on it to compare how easy it turns.

If you haven't already found one, there is a good 78 page PDF manual on Manuals Lib that is just under 4mb and can be downloaded.
Link: Briggs & Stratton 700 DOV Series Manual.

Page 22 onwards has some troubleshooting tips for a non starting engine.

Quote from: Rach on May 02, 2023, 02:37:25 PMBut I can't find a part number for the one with the red arrow or a seal for the bowl.

Yep air filter housing to carb gasket is 691894
The other gasket appears to be 692555 qty x2

The bowl seal there's a choice of two depending on what carb you have, so take a look here and you should see which one you need,

Thanks Mick, that's a useful site, I have the Huayi carburettor with the 2 bolts in the bowl.

Have you ever or know of anyone who has tried after-market gaskets or carburettors?

I was looking at these 2 gaskets from Garden Hire Spares:
https://www.gardenhirespares.co.uk/briggs-stratton-air-filter-gasket-273364-691894.html
https://www.gardenhirespares.co.uk/3796-briggs-stratton-intake-gasket-27355s.html

Then I found this on Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Carburetor-Compatible-Briggs-Stratton-591852/dp/B09N3W2ZJ9/

Which says 595509 in the title but isn't in stock, although using one of the other part numbers out of its title, it seems you can get a whole carburettor with gaskets for £12,  https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vklopdsh-Carburetor-Briggs-Stratton-Replacement/dp/B0BK9Z52H2/

Sort of intrigued to get one to see what kinda quality it is, cheap way to get a replacement float bowl,

Sorry for delay in responding.  I have used one or two none genuine carbs on some two stroke stuff, though they were for my own stuff. They worked fine.  But I only use genuine parts at work for customer machines as a rule.

I haven't tried a copy carb for a mower though, I usually manage to get the old one working.

This is probably a dumb question but does anyone know what the parts are that I've highlighted in this picture?

eBay.jpg

I'm looking at a cheap Carburettor Repair Kit on eBay and I don't recall seeing anything that looks like them when I cleaned up my carburettor.

Welch plugs.  The smaller one on the side of the carb (if it has one) and the larger one on the underside of the carb body above the float.  The one underneath only acts as a baffle for the air vent, so unless it's fallen out I wouldn't worry about it tbh.

Thanks Mick, I had never heard of them till now

Time for another silly question ;D a few posts ago you gave me the part numbers for the gaskets I need for the carb and one of them says x 2.

Quote from: Mick on May 06, 2023, 06:35:11 PMThe other gasket appears to be 692555 qty x2

I stripped my carb down again this afternoon but it appears the lawnmower only has 1 of them gaskets, not 2.

Looks in decent condition so am not sure if it's been replaced previously.

But I can't figure out where the second gasket is supposed to go amongst these parts,

The daft question is... is it possible that 2 gaskets are supposed to be placed together to make one thick gasket?

Or could there be a mistake on the website?

I guess the last owner could have removed it and didn't replace it :-\

Mick

As far as I'm aware they only use one of those gaskets, though all the parts lists say two required. I would have to check that out when at work to make sure. Your gasket looks in good condition though.

Or you could phone Uni-Power and see what they say, https://www.uni-power.co.uk/

I managed to do a screen shot of the 700 DOV series PDF manual and although the image has the different brand of carb, the setup looks the same and they only use one gasket (K) so I guess it is likely to be a mistake.

If it did require 2 you would think the B&S parts look up image would have been done like the edited image I've attached on the right.

My float bowl gasket arrived today so I will fit that tonight and see if we are any nearer to getting this thing running as it should  :)

Little update... I've refitted the carb, the mower started on the first turn of the key within the 5 seconds and it no longer hunts.

It's raining now but hopefully tomorrow night I will get a chance to use it for half an hour to warm it up and then see if the problem of it not starting when hot is solved too.

Thanks to Mick and MicksMowers for your time and suggestions  :)

Mick

I would have only fitted one tbh, unless I suspected a leak then I'd have added the second one if I had it sitting there. I did ask the main distributor and they gave a really vague answer which made no sense. So I don't think they knew the answer either. lol..

Glad it's running ok.  Fingers crossed it'll stay good.

I was looking on the Power Spares website and noticed a couple of errors in their diagrams too so guess all the suppliers make mistakes lol

Tried the mower today, emptied the grass box twice and it started first time, then the third time I emptied the grass box... it wouldn't start again  :-\  so the issue seems to kick in when it gets hot, I waited 10 mins and then it started again - then after 20 minutes the same thing happens.

I replaced the oil when I got it but I'm thinking of changing it again in case it's got any petrol in it from attempting to start it although when it's running it seems to run fine.

is it safe to try starting it without the air filter? I was thinking of giving the auto choke lever a bit of a wiggle when attempting to start it just to see if that makes any difference

Yes it's safe to start it without the air filter just for testing, but don't cut grass like it.

Removed and refitted all the springs and the original issues seem to all be sorted now.

One new issue developed today when cutting the lawn, after emptying the grass box I went to restart it and nothing happened, totally dead.

Wiggled the wires but nothing happened, put a multimeter on the cable from the ignition key and it beeped every time I turned the key, even after wiggling the cable so don't think it's that.

I read that some Instart mowers had an issue with the wiring harness, does anyone know what was issues it caused?
