I'm not sure about the breather, but the tank will gain pressure as the fuel gasses, it's only designed to let air in not out. It's very common for the blowers to flood with fuel when not in use, normally due to a worn out pump diaphragm.  If removed and held up to the light you can see tiny holes in them.  Might be worth checking.

That's a result then. You just got to cure the flooding issue, or get them to turn fuel off after using the mower.  :tup:

Hi Kevin.  Wondering if you have some fuel in the sump due to a flooding carb, that will breath fuel vapour down the intake and make it run rich.

Can't remember if I mentioned replacing the jet module when chatting on facebook, but that would have been my next suggestion if cleaning it didn't cure it. Some of the early ones were jetted incorrectly (I know I mentioned that before).  Great that it's sorted though. @Gregs mowing

Sorry for late reply, I've beed away from the site for a while. You've probably got this solved by now.

If not. then a image of the throttle linkage attached to a reply might be helpful.

It can also be possible that the internal governor has failed.  Or if your lucky someone has either been fiddling and mess with the governor arm setting.

Hi John, and welcome to TGMF. I  think it's a Villiers 150 lightweight vertical shaft engine. Give that a Google and see if you can find someone similar.

Sorry 40jack, I totally missed this post somehow.  

I believe you can use the right hand one in place of it by turning the ratchet pawls around the other way.  Or get a ratchet assembly from a later model such as a HR 194 they should be the same.

Is there any way you could attach some photos of the machine and perhaps the parts you're struggling with. That might help to work out what make and model it is.

If you pop the jet module out of the carb and look at the end of it where it goes into the carb, if you see two brass jets it's the old one. If you see one it's the new one. See attached images showing both old and new. Part number (596521).

By "slight surge" do mean the engine is hunting slightly, as in revving up and down? 

It's usually caused by a slight blockage to one of the jets. Make sure if it's a older model that it has the correct jet module fitted, and replace if necessary.

You're welcome.  It's good to hear that outcome.  The new top pulley half of the bbc is made of a less brittle (copper infused) material so should hold up without issue.

I would say the dogs have lost their edges in the gearbox, or the clutch arm has broken, usually due to worn dogs, or a bad (stiff) clutch cable.

Anyone go to SALTEX this year? Was it any good, and did you see anything of interest?

Weak clutch springs, or idle speed too high perhaps?  I've not looked inside one of those for quite some time to be honest.
