Hi everyone. Just wondering if anyone has any experience of a replacement engine for the original Tecumseh on a 308L model think a 1995 vintage. Was having a Briggs might fit.

Am loathed to scrap as as the bed is still in great condition.

Mick

Hi and welcome to TGMForum.

Yes you can certainly fit a Briggs on this machine. That same chassis was produced with various engines including Tecumseh and Briggs, push or self propelled they all used the same chassis.

Do you have a donor engine for it?

Hi Mick, many thanks for the welcome. Apologies, should of introduced myself first, my bad.

I don't. From my limited knowledge of mowers it's a complete midfield what would fit with the correct shaft length / blade.

Hence, found this forum and ask the experts.

Good morning everyone.

Have done quite a bit of Googling to no avail. Anyone know of a blade / engine combo that'll fit?

Mick

You going for a second hand engine, or looking at new?

Hi Mick, open to any suggestions / advice.

Borrowed a McCulloch to tied me over. Grass has been destroyed lol

It depends whether you want to keep it Push or add the parts for self propelled, but either way you should be able to find a donor machine that someone is scrapping with a good Briggs quantum on it.

The reason so many are being scrapped is because the plastic throwplate at the back is no longer available and that also holds the roller frame in place. It's usually the roller mount part of this throwplate that breaks and that renders the machine unusable in most cases.

My advice would be to look for one of these and grab what you need off of it. Your machine can either be self propelled or push depending on what the donor machine has. Engine, Blade Disk, Blade and bolt, throttle control, and OPC cable, top handle, etc.

Bear in mind, that because those throwplates are obsolete it wouldn't be worth throwing loads of money at it. Those plastic throwplates are now becoming rare and people are asking silly money for them, and some I've seen for sale have been glued or plastic welded which isn't really strong enough. (Buyers Beware).  ;)

It should bolt straight on to that chassis.  Just check the length and diameter of the crank first.

Nice one Mick. Hopefully it'll be up and running for next year. You are a wealth of information.
