I had a Honda Izy HRG536 that had variable speed control via a paddle ..... It was pretty good except I had continual problems with the rear wheels locking on pull back. Even if I  released the drive and push last foot or so but to try and release. I don't suppose anyone else had this problem and came up with a permanent fix? .... It seems a pretty common problem, videos on you tube etc and a recall on American machines (to do with replacing rear height adjusters)forums but nothing cured the problem permanently for me. I had to sell it on within the year.

That'll be the so called "Smart Drive"  The early ones adopting the same system as the Toro Recycler, where you push the (In this case, Paddles) on the handle, and that tipped the gearbox back putting tension on the belt.  Speed was achieved basically by slipping the belt.

The later version of this the belt is permanently tensioned, and variable speed done inside the gearbox.

Interesting Mick ... Do you mean the later versions of the same model with smart drive are permanently tensioned and do not suffer the rear wheels locking problem or would I need to move away from smart drive?

I did have the single speed version Sewell which doesn't have the problem but is far too slow so not an option

Paul I think the newer ones are better regarding the pull back problem.  I will have check this first though, just for confirmation.

The fixed speed 21" IZY is terribly slow as you said, not sure why they thought it was ok like that tbh. My biggest beef with that 21" machine is the quality of the "Steel" deck, and the separate front wheel adjusters.  Front wheels start to splay out as the deck bends, it's a bit weak in that area.  I really think Honda should give that some attention.
